Celebrating World Consumer Rights Day 2025: A Step Towards a Sustainable Future

On March 28, 2025, I had the honor of attending the "World Consumer Rights Day 2025" celebration hosted by the Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat, Balangir. The event took place at the local town girls' high school auditorium, a venue that was filled with the vibrant energy of advocates for consumer rights, sustainability, and justice.

The theme of the year, "A Just Transition to Sustainable Lifestyle," couldn’t have been more timely, urging everyone present to reflect on how our consumption patterns affect the environment, society, and future generations. This theme called for not just awareness but a call to action, urging all of us to adopt more sustainable practices in our daily lives.

The event saw some distinguished personalities taking the stage to share their wisdom and insights. Gopabandhu Satpathi, the esteemed President of Akhull Bharatiya Mishan Panchayat, Balangir, welcomed us all with an inspiring address. His words underscored the need for collective action in addressing consumer issues and building a just, sustainable society.

In his speech, Shri. Vijaya Nanda Sethi, the Additional District Magistrate of Balangir, emphasized the importance of understanding consumer rights and how the government is working to protect these rights through various programs and policies. He reinforced the idea that consumer rights are a crucial aspect of a functioning democracy, as they empower individuals to make informed choices and demand accountability.

We also had the privilege of hearing from key experts, including Mrs. Liza Sahu from Nasarpal, Balangir, and Shri Ravindra Kumar Tripathi, President of the District Consumer Redressal Commission. Their insights into consumer protection, along with practical tips for making sustainable choices, were truly eye-opening.

The panel was further enriched by the presence of Shri Pradeep Kumar Nag, the District Chief Education Officer, Shri Saroj Kumar Sahu, the District Information Public Relations Officer, and Shri Ranjan Rashmi Parika, Deputy Controller of Metrology, Balangir. Each speaker brought a unique perspective, covering areas ranging from sustainable consumer education to policy interventions that aim to ensure fairness and justice for consumers.

As I delivered my lecture during the event, I was reminded of how interconnected all our actions are. Each consumer choice we make can either contribute to or detract from a sustainable lifestyle. It's clear that a "just transition" will require a collaborative effort, where consumers, businesses, and policymakers work together to create a more sustainable and equitable world.

In conclusion, the World Consumer Rights Day 2025 event was not only a celebration of consumer rights but also a reminder of the vital role that each of us plays in shaping a sustainable future. As we move forward, let us all commit to adopting practices that ensure a sustainable lifestyle for ourselves and for future generations.
